Setsuro Wakamatsu’s ‘FUKUSHIMA 50’ to Star Koichi Sato and Ken Watanabe

The Kadokawa Corporation announced their latest feature film, Fukushima 50, directed by Setsuro Wakamatsu (The Unbroken, Whiteout). Koichi Sato (Terminal, Whiteout, and Unforgiven) and Academy Award nominee Ken Watanabe (Inception, Letters from Iwo Jima, Godzilla, The Last Samurai) headline the cast.

Principal photography will begin at the end of November 2018 in Japan for an anticipated 2020 release.

The film is based on the book ‘On the Brink: The Inside Story of Fukushima Daiichi’ by Ryusho Kadota and recounts the aftermath of the Great East Japan earthquake, the tsunami and ensuing meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The film follows the 50 courageous workers – including Shift Supervisor Isaki (Koichi Sato) and Site Superintendent Yoshida (Ken Watanabe) – who risked their lives and stayed at the plant to prevent total destruction of the overheating reactors and minimize devastation.

Fukushima 50, promises to be an action packed, tense survival drama based on ‘an incredible true story’ that will grip and shocks its audience as they journey through incomprehensible nightmare.

At 2:46 pm on Friday 11 March 2011, the biggest earthquake ever recorded in Japan occurred, the devastating magnitude of the earthquake caused a tsunami which hit theFukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The tsunami damaged the cooling system of the reactors in the power plant, causing Hydrogen gas explosions and a terrifying nuclear meltdown.

Faced with the knowledge that if the plant was abandoned, the nuclear meltdown could affect the lives of 50 million people who lived in a 250km radius of the plant, 50 workers, despite the risk of radiation poisoning and possibly fatal consequences, volunteered to go on a potential suicide mission and returned to a dangerously radioactive nuclear power plant to prevent catastrophe.

At the front-line was Shift Supervisor Isaki (Koichi Sato), who was faced with a series of unforeseen situations and incredibly challenging decisions to try and stabilize the reactors, which were on the verge of tipping out of control. Meanwhile, Site Superintendent Yoshida (Ken Watanabe) had the responsibility of taking charge of the situation and his team, whilst trying to convey the severity of the situation to Headquarters, who didn’t comprehend the scale of destruction. Finally, the Japan Self-Defense Force were sent in and Operation Tomodachi was launched by the U.S Air Force to provide relief to disaster victims.

Greenwich takes the lead on Billy Corben’s ‘Screwball’

Greenwich Entertainment and rakontur has announced that Greenwich has acquired U.S. rights to Screwball directed by Billy Corben (Cocaine Cowboys).  The surreal documentary is a true-crime dramedy investigating Major League Baseball’s infamous doping scandal involving a nefarious clinician and his most famous client: the New York Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez.  Greenwich is planning a theatrical release in the spring of 2019 at the start of the new MLB season.

“Billy Corben’s wildly entertaining doc is his latest look at a perverse pursuit of the American Dream,” said Greenwich’s Andy Bohn.  “As Variety noted, Screwball ‘suggests what might result if the Monty Python troupe were given carte blanche to produce an investigative report for 60 Minutes.’”

Corben added, “There’s nothing like seeing a comedy in the theater and sharing the laughter with your fellow filmgoers. It’s been a blast watching film festival audiences react to Screwball and I’m so psyched that Greenwich will bring this experience nationwide.”

30WEST negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers with Greenwich Entertainment.

Focus Features will release the documentary ‘Bathtubs Over Broadway’ Nov. 30

About Bathtubs Over Broadway

When he started as a comedy writer for the Late Show With David Letterman, Steve Young had few interests outside of his day job. But while gathering material for a segment on the show, Steve stumbled onto a few vintage record albums that would change his life forever.

Bizarre cast recordings – marked “internal use only” – revealed full-throated Broadway-style musical shows about some of the most recognizable corporations in America: General Electric, McDonald’s, Ford, DuPont, Xerox. Steve didn’t know much about musical theater, but these recordings delighted him in a way that nothing ever had.

In Bathtubs Over Broadway, filmmaker Dava Whisenant follows Steve Young on his quest to find all he can about this hidden world. While tracking down rare albums, unseen footage, composers and performers, Steve forms unlikely friendships and discovers that this discarded musical genre starring tractors and bathtubs was bigger than Broadway.

With David Letterman, Chita Rivera, Martin Short, Florence Henderson, Susan Stroman, Jello Biafra and more.  Winner of the Tribeca Film Festival’s Albert Maysles Award for Best New Documentary Director, Bathtubs Over Broadway is produced by Dava Whisenant, Amanda Spain, and Susan Littenberg and written by Ozzy Inguanzo and Dava Whisenant. David Letterman also serves as executive producer.
