Catherine O’Hara, Best Known for ‘Home Alone’ and ‘Schitt’s Creek’, Tragically Passes Away

Catherine O’Hara, best known as Kevin’s mother Kate McCallister from the first and second Home Alone and Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek, has sadly passed away today at the age of 71.

O’Hara’s career spans over fifty years in Hollywood, starting in 1974 as a cast member of The Second City in her hometown of Toronto, and culminating in her first Emmy. Some of her first film roles were in Double Negative, After Hours, Heartburn, Beetlejuice, Home Alone, and its 1992 sequel. She has maintained a good motherly relationship with Macaulay Culkin and accompanied him to his Walk of Fame Ceremony back in 2023.

Other projects of hers included Best in Show, For Your Consideration, Waiting for Guffman, A Mighty Wind, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Chicken Little. She played Moira Rose on Schitt’s Creek from 2015 to 2020, earning a second Primetime Emmy Award.

Culkin left a wonderful tribute on his Instagram, stating, “Mama. I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you. But I had so much to say. I love you. I’ll see you later.”

She is survived by her husband, Bo Welch, her two sons, and her siblings. May she rest in peace.
