Record Executive Adrian Gurvitz Helped Launch Golden Globe Award Winner Andra Day

British Grammy-Nominated singer, songwriter, musician and record executive Adrian Gurvitz has had a long career in rock with such bands as the Baker Gurvitz Army with Ginger Baker and Buddy Miles to an extensive solo pop career. He moved to Los Angeles in 1989 where he turned his focus to Producing and writing for signed and unsigned artists of which he would sign to his label.

His wide body of work ranged from (The Bodyguard, Eddie Money, Steve Perry, Pixie Lott, Transviolet, CeCe Winans to signing his daughters Teen pop band No Secrets to Jive Records… list is endless).

One evening in 2010 at The Commons in Calabasas he ran into Kai Milla married to Stevie Wonder at that time.  In conversation he asked if she had come across any great singers lately as he is always looking for new talent.  She quickly responded that she knew of an unknown singer called Cassandra Batie. He researched her and could see that everything about her was great and that he was witnessing an amazing singer with superstar qualities.

Soon after he contacted her introducing himself and said that he would love to sign her to his label (http://Buskinrecords.com/) and make a great album with her.   She signed to his label Buskin and they started work almost immediately.  After a great body of work had been recorded ‘Cheers to the Fall’ it was time for Cassandra to spread her wings.  Gurvitz had always thought she was of “Billie Holiday” stature and talent, so he suggested changing her name to Andra Day, he partnered with Warner Records and the rest is history.

In 2021, she portrayed Billie Holiday in the biopic The United States vs. Billie Holiday, for which she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. Her stage name was inspired by Holiday, whose nickname was “Lady Day”.

Gurvitz continues to develop new artists from every genre of music Rock, Pop and R&B in conjunction with AGM/Lonman.
