“Sonic the Hedgehog 2” sped its way past “Morbius,” sucking the life out of the latter’s earnings in its second weekend. “Sonic 2” opened to a $71 million bow domestic, another $70 million overseas, for a whopping $141 million worldwide opening. For comparison, “Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s” predecessor, simply titled: “Sonic the Hedgehog,” opened to $58 million and opened right before the COVID-19 pandemic in February 2020 (simpler times, eh?). Now, the first film in the franchise did leg out to an eventual $149 million domestic haul, $319 million worldwide, and the sequel now has a chance to top that with its headstart of nearly $13 million.

Meanwhile, “Morbius” struggled mightily in its second weekend, only grossing $10.2 million (-73.9%). While the film has now passed $126 million worldwide, its struggle in its second weekend will likely only be a sign of things to come for “Marvel’s next legend,” as the promotion for the film billed the titular character.

Michael Bay’s latest two-hour adrenaline rush, “Ambulance,” disappointed while coming in fourth place this weekend. It debuted to $8.7 million domestic, add another $24,477,000 overseas for a $31,177,000 total gross. Bay’s last original film to debut in theaters, “13 Hours,” debuted to $16,194,738 for context.

Outside of “Sonic 2,” the biggest story of the week was “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” The film finally opened everywhere — well, not quite — but it did expand to 1,212 more theaters after only being available in 38 theaters the week prior. The critical darling grossed $6,059,263 (+461.8%) in its widest release yet and has been a great success for A24.

“Sonic 2” has some competition coming to town, “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” opens. The previous two entries in the franchise opened to $74.4 million and $62 million, respectively. Note: “The Secrets of Dumbledore” opened in China this past weekend and made $10 million.
