Principal photography began last week on new feature film Bloody Hell, directed by award-winning Molly McGlynn. Bloody Hell marks McGlynn’s second feature film following the acclaimed success of Mary Goes Round and episodic directing work including “Grace and Frankie”,“Bless This Mess”and “The Wonder Years”, and stars Maddie Ziegler (West Side Story, The Fallout) and Emily Hampshire (“Schitt’s Creek”), with D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (”Reservation Dogs”, Beans), Ki Griffin (“Hollyoaks”) and Djouliet Amara (Hello Goodbye And Everything In Between). The film will be distributed in Canada by Elevation Pictures, while Blue Fox Entertainment will handle worldwide sales excluding Canada on Bloody Hell with WME Independent co-repping US rights. Production is taking place in Sudbury, Ontario.
Laced with irreverent humour, Bloody Hell is a coming-of-age “traumedy” that follows 16-year-old Lindy (Maddie Ziegler) who is unexpectedly diagnosed with a reproductive condition. It upends her plans to have sex, her presumptions about womanhood and sexuality, her relationship with her mother (Emily Hampshire), and most importantly, herself. Bloody Hell is a semi-autobiographical feature written and directed by Molly McGlynn; it is her most personal project to date.
“It took me several years to scrape together the courage to write this script which is based on my experience of being diagnosed with MRKH Syndrome when I was sixteen. When I met Maddie, I knew she was the perfect person to capture the nuance and complexity of this confusing, emotionally overwhelming and in hindsight, absurd, time in my adolescent life,” said McGlynn.
The film is being produced by Nice Picture Inc., a production company recently founded by Jennifer Weiss. Jennifer was one of the co-founders of The Film Farm, an award-winning independent production company that found international success with filmmakers such as Atom Egoyan, Brian De Palma, Sarah Polley and Augustine Frizell. Additionally, Brendan Brady (Letterkenny, Mouthpiece), is an Executive Producer, and Liane Cunje is an Associate Producer. The film is funded by Canadian companies Telefilm, NOHFC and Ontario Creates, and produced in association with Crave and SUPER ÉCRAN, divisions of Bell Media.
