Indigenous perspectives take the spotlight as the new feature doc from award winning filmmaker and eco advocate Andrew Nisker makes its US PREMIERE at a special opening night co-presentation between San Diego International Film Festival and California’s Wild & Scenic Film Festival on Friday, February 16th at 7pm in the Nevada Theatre in Nevada City.
During an awards season where Oppenheimer has resurrected discussions around nuclear weapons testing, it’s important to look at the other side of the equation and see and hear the human effects of nuclear testing, in this case following the aftermath of Project Crossroads and the multi-generational existential trauma that the people of Bikini Atoll have endured.
“For our story to be told worldwide on film, it’s incredible, and I am very thankful to the filmmakers and their support for our cause,” says former Bikini Atoll Mayor Anderson Jibas.
“Until people knew what happened and understood what was left unresolved, then there was very little we could do as a commission to deal with these issues. And so, when Andrew reached out and said they were doing this documentary, I was grateful to have an opportunity to share this story through this medium,” shares Rhea Moss-Christian, Inaugural Chair of the Marshall Islands National Nuclear Commission.
Featuring previously unseen and meticulously restored archival footage and a custom 5.1 sound mix, NUKED visually and aurally conveys the terrible power of the bomb and the appalling human costs of nuclear testing. This film was created specifically by filmmaker Andrew Nisker for a theatrical experience.
The Wild & Scenic Screening will kick off a North American “Nuclear Nomads” screening tour, including stops as part of the Uranium International Film Festival tour.
Nuked was made possible by the generous support of Hollywood Suite, Canada Media Fund, Rogers Documentary Fund, Rogers Telefund, film and television Ontario Creates.
