Alas, it turns out Mufasa had to wait a bit before becoming the king of the pack.
After trotting behind the blue speedster for the past two weekends, Mufasa: The Lion King clinched first place for the first weekend of 2025 with $23.836 million, a 35% decrease. The winter legs rally and folks finally turning their heads over to the Disney product allowed this one to shine more in the face of Sonic, Wicked, and Moana. With already $476 million globally, it’ll finish its run with around $600-650 million worldwide, which is still a good number for a $200 million budgeted follow-up but a remaining far cry from its predecessor’s $1.6 billion+ gross in 2019. It should be passing $500 million worldwide by next weekend.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 earned $21.2 million in its third weekend, bringing its domestic total to $187.5 million. It will pass its predecessor’s domestic cume by Tuesday and is already headed for $400 million globally. Once it passes $405 million, it’ll be the highest-earning film in the Sonic series thus far. Oh, and hey, the IP has passed $1 billion worldwide, and Jim Carrey has hinted that he is still eager to return for another outing as his retirement is more of an elongated time off between performances. There is more room to grow for the series, as the fourth installment is already in development and will be released in 2024.
Nosferatu rounded out with a bronze position for a $13.2 million second weekend. It has now passed $100 million worldwide. Moana 2 has passed $960 million worldwide and is on course to slay the $1 billion benchmark. This means Disney will own the three top slots of 2024, as Moana 2 will pass Despicable Me 4 by Tuesday morning. Oh, and Wicked is on course for $700 million globally, the year’s most significant original.
The newcomer of the weekend was The Damned, which earned a measly $801k from 732 theaters.
Next weekend will see the release of Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. Have a happy start to 2025!
