Box Office: ‘Dog Man’ Leads With Very Good $36M Debut, ‘Mufasa’ Passes $650M Globally

Dreamworks Animation strikes again with a $36 million debut for Dog Man. Disclaimer off the hook: The animated film sector hasn’t been an endearing draw since The Good Dinosaur couldn’t fit the bill as another event movie. Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie opened to $24 million in 2017, the same weekend Wonder Woman stormed No Man’s Land and lassoed an impressive $103.5 million debut.

The opening of Dreamwork’s latest title signals the biggest opening of the season this year, and it will prove to be a leggy one, as even The Bad Guys can 4x its, checks notes, also $24 million launch back in 2022. Much as it worked in the past, basing your material on the books draws more kids and, vice-versa, their families to witness the spectacle onscreen in the theater. Good stuff to keep the folks busy as we await the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon on June 13th.

Other newcomer Companion opened to $9.5 million in 3,285 theaters. Marketing was a bit eccentric this time, as the sci-fi comedy was less of a thriller and more of a casual good time. The second trailer did give one too many notes away. But a B+ from CinemaScore could benefit it in the long run until we await the first big blockbuster of the season, Captain America: Brave New World.

Mufasa: The Lion King took bronze on its seventh weekend and has surpassed $650 million globally. Disney can save face with the output, but knows that their days of remakes might soon be coming to bite them. Cue the soundbite, Snow White. One of Them Days is a good old-school movie doing old-school business as it will pass $35 million domestically by the end of the day; still great news for a non-IP, black-led title. Flight Risk has passed $25 million, so even though it won’t win back Oscars (despite Gibson getting an endorsement from Trump for the next era of Hollywood), it will soon make a return on its investment.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is already raking in good business while on PVOD and is marching towards $475-480 million globally. Moana 2 will soon make the rounds for $1.05 billion. And A Complete Unknown may “just” reach $100 million worldwide. Den of Thieves 2: Pantera will pass $50 million globally by tomorrow (which means the threequel is on the way). And Wicked will be wrapping up its run around $725-730 million globally.

Next weekend sees the release of Love Hurts, Heart Eyes, Jazzy, and I Love You Forever.
