Sony to Release ‘Legend of Zelda’ Live Action Film in 2027

On the major backbone success of the recent The Super Mario Bros. Movie smashing records for Nintendo with over $1.3 billion in the spring of 2023, Sony is working with Nintendo to produce the film and will release it on March 26, 2027.

As Variety (link here) reports, Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the Zelda series, explains, “This is Miyamoto. I have been working on the live-action film of ‘The Legend of Zelda’ for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films…I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”

Wes Ball (Maze Runner trilogy, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) will direct the film, and Derek Connolly will write the script. No cast announcements have been made.

For those unfamiliar, the Zelda series centers on various versions of Link, a young individual of the Hylian race, and Princess Zelda to save the land of Hyrule from an evil warlord named Ganon. There have been over twenty game entries since 1986, and it is considered one of Ninetndo’s most successful game franchises, alongside Mario Bros., Pokemon, and Animal Crossing.
