Box Office: ‘Thunderbolts*’ Retains Its Crown of Hope, ‘Clown in a Cornfield’ Opens Good, and ‘Sinners’ Heading for $300M Globally

Despite some new releases outright bombing (yours indeed sends his regards for the admittedly good Fight or Flight and Shadow Force), things seem to be getting back to a good pace for the theaters. If only some more original tentpoles could secure the deal for the fate of this industry. However, having two action films, a fantastic horror film, and an MCU resurgence is still doing well for the summer kickoff.

Thunderbolts* (or The New Avengers as Marvel is broadcasting everywhere) earned $33.1 million in its second weekend. The 55% drop is a better second weekend drop than Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, so it’s doing well for a second weekend dropoff. Unfortunately, it didn’t gross anywhere near those titles in its debut, so take it with a grain of salt on where this does for business. Good reviews and an ushering of “quality over quantity” are worthwhile, but folks need more of an uplift before we get to Avengers: Doomsday next year. With $272 million worldwide, it’ll probably be lower than was anticipated, and gross closer to $450 million worldwide. Why Disney wanted to dip its toes right away with the new title is beyond this writer’s opinion, but A) it devalues the Avengers brand name, which is associated with massive blockbuster headway, as all the titles have scored between $1.4 and $2.9 billion worldwide, and B) concomitantly, someone is going to have to understand why this “de facto” Avengers 5 earned 85% less than Avengers 4. Yes, things were different six years ago, as the world was not accustomed to the likes of COVID, indefinite Disney+ shows, writer strikes, and mediocre Marvel titles, but this is appalling. Seal the deal, Fantastic Four

Sinners earned $21.1 million in its fourth weekend, reaching $215 million domestically more or less. This makes it the first original since Gravity to pass $200 million domestic, and judging by its legs, it might be able to bite its way past Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense ($293 million). If it does so, it’ll become the highest-earning domestic original. It is playing much more with hype and stance in domestic territory than overseas, but this is an unbridled win for Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan.

A Minecraft Movie earned $7.95 million in its sixth weekend, passing $408 million domestic (for Jack Black, that tops Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in 2017) and $910 million worldwide. As mentioned multiple times, the Jack Black/Jason Momoa-led gaming adaptation may have a bridge too far to reach $1 billion, but it could climb as close to $950 million as possible. Warner Bros. is on fire, and the assistance of Final Destination: Bloodlines will asseverate that comment next weekend.

Clown in a Cornfield earned $3.65 million in its debut, which is a record for IFC films. The Accountant 2 has passed $50 million domestically, Until Dawn will wrap up around $45 million globally, and The Amateur will finish its run under $95 million.

Next weekend sees the release of Final Destination: Bloodlines, Hurry Up Tomorrow, A Breed Apart, and To Live and Die and Live.
