The story of the greatest civil rights movement most people have never heard of.
Deaf President Now! chronicles eight days of protests at Gallaudet University in 1988 – the world’s only Deaf university. When the school’s board of trustees appoints a hearing president over several qualified Deaf candidates, students take to the streets to protest the selection, leading to Dr. I. King Jordan becoming the first Deaf president of Gallaudet.
The rallies, boycotts, and protests marked a seminal moment in civil rights history, paving the way for the Americans with Disabilities Act. Deaf President Now! includes exclusive interviews with five key figures of the movement, including the Gallaudet Four and Dr. King Jordan, as well as utilizes an experimental narrative method called Deaf Point of View – which uses impressionistic visual photography and detailed sound design to immerse audiences into the Deaf experience.
The documentary will premiere globally on Apple TV+ on May 16.
