Directed by Boris Lojkine, Souleymane’s Story follows a Guinean immigrant as he races through the Parisian streets making food deliveries. In two days, Souleymane has to plead his case to an immigration officer, who will evaluate his asylum status and determine his future in France. As Souleymane rides and delivers, he practices his story – but he’s not ready.
Souleymane’s Story evokes humanist Dardennes films and draws inspiration from Cristian Mungiu’s 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days (2007) to depict the daily trials and uncertainties faced by migrants in France and globally.
The film has received several awards:
Un Certain Regard Jury Prize – Cannes Film Festival
Un Certain Regard Best Actor (Abou Sangare) – Cannes Film Festival
FIPRESCI Prize – Cannes Film Festival
Best Actor (Abou Sangare) – European Film Awards
Best Male Revelation (Abou Sangare) – César Awards
