STEAL THIS STORY, PLEASE! REVIEW

With the wide range of crime, violence, war, distrust in the Government, etc., where can we expect to get the right information from? Carl Deal and Tia Lessin, directors of Steal This Story, Please!, lead us right into the hands of Democracy Now!.

For a bit of context, Democracy Now! is an independent news program that provides daily and global news hours. Founded in 1996, their content is up to date with current events around the globe, giving their audience real and trustworthy accounts through a diversity of voices. The bright side of being an independent company means their content is not compromised by corporate or government interests.

And this leads us into our super star, Amy Goodman, one of the lead reporters for Democracy Now! and part of the focus for this documentary. Goodman began her career in 1985, a bit before Democracy Now! started up. Despite many people trying to silence her, she prevails on, revealing the truth and uncovering the real stories.

The documentary, Steal This Story, Please!, walks us through the empowering stories of Goodman. Her work over the past 30 years has been rigorous. Holding the powerful accountable for their actions, reporting from high-risk conflict zones, and the on goings of the Democracy Now! news room. Directors Carl Deal and Tia Lessin combine a picture of the power journalism holds, especially in an era of corporate control and political attacks on truth.

The film is in documentary style, piecing together different interviews and news stories Goodman has covered. Whether you are a fan of documentaries or not, this film offers its own exciting take; leaving the boring monotone voice-over with images and interviews compiled together, and inviting the audience to engage with the film, showing real news stories, up close and in the action.

If you are all about the news and what’s going on in the world, or if you are interested in taking your first steps into it, this film offers a real experience, showing the truth behind what is really going on.

Steal This Story, Please! has played at the Mill Valley Film Festival (and won audience favorite documentary), Woodstock Film Festival (and won audience choice award for best feature documentary), and Santa Fe International Film Festival (and won special Jury prize for best documentary and audience award for best documentary feature).
