Disney’s Hoppers earned $28.5 million in its second weekend, totaling $86.6 million. Yeah, that hold is roughly on par with Elemental’s second weekend of $29 million, and the feature is opening strong in other international territories with only a 17% dip overseas, and has already passed $165 million worldwide.
Hoppers is likely looking at a $200 million domestic finish and $400 million globally to wrap up its run, which is good news for a Pixar original. But wait, there could be even more good news, as this feature has yet to open in China and Saudi Arabia next weekend. Now granted, maybe it won’t get the overblown “you can push us easily past $1 billion treatment” a la Zootopia 2. But that was the case in the 2010s: most Hollywood flicks breaking out in China were the same ones that broke out everywhere else. Strong reviews, good buzz, and another animated feature to pull at heartstrings, and no competition until Super Mario Galaxy Movie means this Pixar feature can perform more or less the same as those originals that came before it.
If it legs like Elemental, Zootopia, or How to Train Your Dragon, which all played more favorably overseas, it might even fly past $550-600 million worldwide. And if we do our due diligence here, that joins it in the confident club of renowned Pixar features, including Brave, Tangled, Ratatouille, Monsters, Inc., The Incredibles, Moana, Big Hero 6, Up, and Monsters University. So yeah, Hoppers might do beautifully in the long run, and Disney might get to party once like this was a bona fide hit from what was once considered a “bygone era” for Pixar standards in today’s time.
In other news, Reminders of Him opened with $18.25 million; plotwise, Maika Monroe stars as a woman trying to reconnect with her daughter after serving a seven-year prison sentence. We’ll see how it performs against the female-skewing features like Ready or Not 2, and They Will Kill You. Undertone opened with $9.33 million, which is a worthwhile number for A24, amid good reviews and, yes, even a C from CinemaScore (to be fair, most indie horror doesn’t seem to strike a chord with folks).
Scream 7 earned $8.35 million in its third weekend and has now surpassed $106.5 million domestically. Yes, it’s a tad lower than its predecessor, but give it a few days. Meanwhile, it’s already the highest-earning Scream film out there (not counting inflation). Should a Scream 8 be developed in the wake of Kevin Williamson not returning and/or the unknown return (or absences) of Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera? It’s a tough sell, but as long as the budget is within limits, it can take a lower total and still do fine.
GOAT will be passing $100 million domestically sometime in the next weekend or two, The Bride! has tanked and done even more so in its second weekend with a 70% drop, and Crime 101 has passed $35.5 million domestically. Rereleases for Kiki’s Delivery Service and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze brought in $1.7 million and $1.5 million, respectively. And Wuthering Heights has passed $225 million worldwide.
Next weekend sees the release of Project Hail Mary, Ready or Not 2, Do Not Enter, The Pout-Pout Fish, Ricky, and Vampires of the Velvet Lounge.
