The independent film company, A24, has produced yet another horror film that will certainly get viewers talking. After the success of its previous horror movies such as X, Pearl, Midsommar, and Hereditary, A24 changed the face of horror stories. Talk to Me had its preview screening at the Adelaide Film Festival in 2022. It then had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2023 and is coming to theaters on July 28, 2023. The movie is an upcoming Australian horror story about a group of friends who discover an embalmed hand covered in words that can be used to call upon spirits. However, one group member ends up releasing a frightening and malicious spirit.
The trailer starts with two young women, Mia (Sophie Wilde) and Jade (Alexandra Jensen), preparing for a get-together with friends. Mia soon discovers the group is about to participate in a séance. Mia agrees to go first, though obviously uncomfortable right before it starts. Mia admits to being able to feel her late mother’s presence after holding the embalmed hand. Viewers get a slight glimpse of a disturbing figure looming over Mia, who I assume is her late mother? Not sure where the random kangaroo creepily crawling on the floor and stepping in blood tied into the story, but nothing says Australia like kangaroos. The trailer ends with a newly possessed Mia being gapped at in horror by her friends.
What helps make this a strong trailer is that not much is given away to the audience. The eerie music and dark setting screamed: horror. Several movie trailers have the unfortunate habit of revealing the movie’s entire plot in a two-minute trailer. The Talk to Me trailer managed to keep the movie’s entire plot under wraps to get viewers excited for its upcoming theatrical release.
