While most of us are ready to jump into the next adventure with Dune: Part Two next weekend, let’s recap how things are going over the last weekend of February.
Bob Marley: One Love dipped 53% in its second weekend with $13.5 million; it has now topped $110 million globally. It has narrowly beaten out Straight Outta Compton‘s 56% second-weekend dropoff but is behind the likes of Elvis and Bohemian Rhapsody. Perhaps it’s another spirited win for Paramount after Mean Girls a few weeks ago amidst a dull-performing box office and another indication that non-franchise films might be splurging back into the front light. Again, there is more optimism behind John Krasinski’s IF coming out in May, but this is a win nonetheless.
Newcomers Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To The Hashira Training and Ordinary Angels dropped off this weekend with $11.575 million and $6.5 million, respectively. The former earned positive reviews (B+ from CinemaScore), while the latter dipped below expectations (even with an A+ from CinemaScore).
Madame Web dipped “only” 61% in its second weekend with $6 million. The latest “Spider-Man not involved” feature truly is befitting of a time when studios could take a stab with unknown characters a decade ago and possibly attain a profit from them. And sure, it didn’t crash and burn in its follow-up weekend like Batman v. Superman, The Marvels, or Ant-Man 3, but this is another ill-fated sign that Sony’s spinoff series doesn’t muster enough energy to relish in its ambition or the thought of considering such heroes. It currently sits past $61 million worldwide, so maybe it can do better than Morbius, but Dakota Johnson’s led feature most likely will be another bust once March springs into action.
Migration has almost multiplied its opening weekend numbers by ten, already holding to get past $267 million worldwide from a $12.4 million domestic opening. Even Wonka has passed $610 million worldwide, and Aquaman 2 could reach $433 million globally. Argylle should’ve opened on Christmas, it seems (busting at $85.7 million worldwide on a $200 million budget). Drive-Away Dolls opened to a miserable $2.4 million, and The Beekeeper will pass $150 million worldwide once March arrives.
Next weekend sees the release of Dune: Part Two, Problemista, Outlaw Posse, Spaceman (on Netflix) and Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate (on Peacock).
