Box Office: ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Reigns Atop With $51.6M; ‘Speak No Evil’ Debuts Nicely

Warner Brothers retains its title for the gold in the second weekend, as the Tim Burton/Michael Keaton Beetlejuice Beetlejuice keeps its place with a $51.6 million domestic turnout (54% drop). It’ll pass $200 million domestically by Tuesday night. The great news is that the horror comedy is pulling legs more like It (2017), which roped in $328.8 million in its domestic run. While yours truly cannot forsee this sequel coming close, a reasonable $275 million domestic is not a perilous sign. Overseas, though, is the scary territory as it appears this will play more for the folks closely acclimated in North America with Beetlejuice like they were for Twisters, yet not so much of a dawning. Transformers One could be the only mighty challenger to halt legs as we head into the Halloween season. As we always say, for the next blockbuster to trounce the competition, we shall see.

Speak No Evil took 2nd place with $11.5 million, a reputable debut for the $15 million budgeted thriller that involves another, checks notes, vacation gone uncanny starring a respectable James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, and Scoot McNairy. Blumhouse has been hitting some good notes as horror seems to be one of the last places that a newcomer title can strike fear into the audience’s eyes of giving it a shot compared to the “Save the World Every Other Day” blockbuster. Yes, this is technically a remake of the 2022 title, but it’s a good reason not many would know of the previous’s existence (that’s available to stream on Shudder). Positive reviews and a B+ from CinemaScore will give this another victory lap for Blumhouse as they win double, provided we don’t run another Freddy Krueger or Jason Voorhees installment.

Deadpool & Wolverine took third in its eighth weekend with $5.2 million domestically and has passed $1.3 billion worldwide. It should be passing Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ($1.308 billion) sometime by Tuesday, even if Black Panther ($1.35 billion) could be too far from its reach. It’s best to enjoy the “educated guess” because it’ll keep pleasing the MCU track for the remainder of the year thanks to its pop-culture fun-inducing opening and the buddy comedy stylistics.

Am I Racist? and The Killer’s Game earned $4.75 million and $2.6 million, respectively. The former is an interesting mockumentary starring Matt Walsh in hosting an “anti-racist” shop to take shots at the DEI agenda. The latter is another fall from grace for Lionsgate as they remain in a rut for theatrical releases (until their comeback with Ballerina and Saw XI next year). Oddly, Dave Bautista cannot mask himself as a box office star (unless under the Drax or Glossu Rabban disguise) in original titles nowadays, although he was the standout in Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin last year.

Reagan will pass $25 million domestically sometime tomorrow night, Alien: Romulus has earned $101 million domestically and $330 million worldwide, It Ends With Us has passed $325 million globally, and Despicable Me 4 continues to want to leg out to $950 million worldwide.

Next weekend sees the release of Transformers One, Wolfs, Never Let Go, A Different Man, The Substance, Omni Loop, and The Featherweight.
