Box Office: Finally, a ‘Predator’ Comes to Save the Weekend

Get out of the way, Aliens! Predator: Badlands secured a $40 million debut, a record for the IP and great news for a box office in dire need of resuscitation before the gargantuan blockbusters roll out later this month and in December. Positive reviews and an A- from CinemaScore will surely keep it rolling, and it is a rollicking, pleasing feature to witness, even if the franchise doesn’t mean much to the general public.

Is it possible that the direct-to-Hulu Prey helped bolster numbers in this case? Arguably so, but yours indeed keeps thinking of Fede Alvarez’s recent Alien: Romulus, which scored a $351 million global total, as a precedent. This is one of the few franchises in the days gone by since Disney purchased 20th Century to outlive its expectations, so at least they know this can land a good conventional total, even if it won’t be skyrocketing past a Planet of the Apes or Prometheus. Nonetheless, an $80 million global debut suggests it could pass $200 million worldwide and give a general thumbs-up to Predator‘s modern-day popularity.

In other news, Regretting You is pulling sleeper legs, with only a 9% dip from last weekend’s Halloween, and has passed $38.5 million domestically. This is great news for the Paramount Pictures title, meaning it will easily triple its budget.

Black Phone 2 earned $5.3 million in its fourth weekend as it has already started rolling out onto PVOD. The Grabber’s return has earned $70 million domestically and $120.4 million globally. It will probably finish out its run around $140-145 million worldwide, which is still a worthwhile result for another horror icon as of late that isn’t named Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, or Jason Voorhees.

Newcomer Sarah’s Oil opened with $4.45 million while Nuremberg opened with $4 million. Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc is nearing $140 million worldwide, while Bugonia will pass $25 million globally later this weekNewcomer Die, My Love opened with $2.83 million and a (shocking) D+ from CinemaScore. Did Jennifer Lawrence’s comments to the press intend to mislead the audience?

And Tron: Ares is going to finish its run around $140 million, which is an undeniable bust and another reminder that Disney can make good use of Fox IPs, but not of this one.

Next weekend sees the release of The Running Man, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, Keeper, Eternity, The Perfect Gamble, Trap House, Arco, and Rebuilding.
