Amid the first 100 days of Trump’s return to office, the 47th president has pledged to halt any efforts to expand DEI. This news has rattled Hollywood executives and studios alike.
Disney, for example, shut the door on its “Reimagine Tomorrow,” which launched in 2021 to amplify underheard minorities and had several other employment programs. There were multiple interstitial interviews on Disney Channel for Black History Month and International Women’s History Month. In Disney’s case, the attributing of “white-washing” has been at the forefront, as most of the recent Disney live-action remakes have received significant criticism from social media/online marketing.
Amazon, Paramount, Warner Brothers, and Comcast have also gotten hit with taking steps back or not releasing any further DEI incentive programs. The head of Netflix (in a post on Variety) has commented, “It’s almost impossible for entertainment companies to withdraw holistically from the work of diversity, equity and inclusion…There’s no way you’re going to compete without creating the kind of authentic programming where people feel reflected.”
In a note from Hollywood Reporter, Pinterest remarked, “If efforts around diversity, equity and inclusion are perceived as insufficient or overdone, we may not be able to attract and retain talent, we may be subject to investigations, litigation and other proceedings and our brand and reputation and stock price may be harmed.”
Who knows where this will all fly, but the President wants most of these measures to be cut, and it will be up to individual companies to gauge all this for future litigation or lawsuits.
