Focus Features is re-releasing Brokeback Mountain nationwide theatrically, with showings starting June 22 & 25. A new film poster, merchandise, and other associated initiatives will accompany the release.
Brokeback Mountain follows Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) as two young men who are assigned to work on Brokeback Mountain in Wyoming, the summer of 1963. The two form a lifelong friendship that evolves into one of love and heartbreak over two decades, all set against the backdrop of the expansive, uninterrupted beauty of the American West.
The film is based on Annie Proulx’s short story of the same name, originally published in 1997. In 2000, Proulx published a slightly extended version in her Pulitzer Prize-finalist short story collection Close Range: Wyoming Stories.
Directed by Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Life of Pi) and starring Ledger, Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway and Michelle Williams, Brokeback Mountain became a classic for its breaking of cinematic and social barriers while cementing its place in its cast’s legacies. The film won three Academy Awards out of eight nominations, among other extensive critical success.
