Box Office: Last Weekend of 2025 Brings Good News and Holiday Legs

It’s time for the wrap up of the 2025 calendar year, and what better way than to trot through the numbers once more for the last weekend to put the bow on top. We will be covering the winners and losers of the year imminently, but let’s plunge through the numbers in the aftermath of Christmas and before 2026 arrives on Thursday.

Avatar: Fire and Ash continues to run along doing its Avatar business, and whether folks remember astutely what happens in the world of Pandora is meaningless, because the numbers still look good. James Cameron’s threequel earned $64 million domestically and $181 million overseas. Interestingly enough, that hold domestically is better than its predecessor, which, lest we forget, opened higher in its debut. It’s already past $760 million worldwide, is the third-biggest overseas earner, and the sixth-highest-earning film of 2025. The question lingering in everyone’s minds is: will it leg out to $2 billion like its predecessors?

If we account for the multiplier and holds in comparison to its predecessor, it’ll safely (emphasis on safely) earn around $450 million domestically and $1.6 billion worldwide. James Cameron, not time to unveil what the fourth and fifth chapters hold for us, as any film, let alone a threequel, earning more than $1.5 billion is a (more than enough) bona fide reminder that folks will clamor for more of the product (see Avengers: Infinity War breaking the news to Avengers: Endgame). The competition this time around has been buzzworthy and for good reason, as seven titles have earned $10 million or more this weekend, which is the first time in over seven years since Equalizer 2 and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again butted heads in July 2018. Point in case: Avatar 3 can still bring much life to theaters if Hollywood lets it do so.

In other news, Zootopia 2 blossomed over the Christmas weekend by earning $20 million in its fifth weekend, bringing it to $321.3 million domestically and $1.42 billion worldwide. It should pass $1.5 billion sometime once the new year starts, and will probably finish its run around $1.7-1.8 billion worldwide. Oh, and it’s still performing crazily in China, already past $550 million there; should Endgame be worried?

A24’s Marty Supreme finally widened its release, grossing $17.5 million in its second weekend, and it should pass $30 million domestic by tomorrow morning. One nice little boon for A24 as it wraps up an “Okay-ish” year. The Housemaid earned $15.4 million in its second weekend and will pass $50 million domestically by Tuesday.

Sony Pictures’ newcomer The Anaconda struck a mixed note and opened with only $14.55 million. The Paul Rudd/Jack Black-led feature rebooting the 1997 cult classic might get some bonuses thanks to the star power, but it’ll be a tough sell to see if it can do the business and come close to the 1997 global earnings of $136.8 million.

Angel Studios’ David has passed $50 million domestically, while The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants has passed $60 million globally. Song Sung Blue opened with $7.6 million.

Wicked: For Good has passed $500 million globally and should finish its run around $530-540 million worldwide, while Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 has passed $220 million worldwide. The latter should match its predecessor’s domestic total once it wraps up.

Next weekend sees the release of We Bury the Dead and The Dutchman. Happy 2026 to everyone!
