In a weekend that did the “as usual for business” for January, it’s time to gloss over the numbers.
Avatar: Fire and Ash retained its crown (inevitably) in its fourth weekend, earning $21.3 million domestically. That drop is in line with Return of the King (-50% on weekend four) and suggests we’ll be looking at a $415-430 million finish, as it’ll crawl past $1.4 billion before it wraps up in the theaters. Does that mean James Cameron needs to scamper and divulge the details for the fourth and fifth chapters? Not necessarily, but Disney will need some biggies (cough cough, Doomsday) to sell that it can keep its winter slot as a behemoth. Yes, it’s earning less domestically than Lilo & Stitch and Zootopia 2, but it’s all towards the grand prize, right? Speaking of Zootopia 2, it will probably eek past $400 domestically and $1.75 billion globally once all is said and done (note that it has already grossed $75 million in Japan, on pace to become the 7th-biggest Hollywood title over there).
Newcomer Primate (distributed by Paramount Pictures) opened with $11.3 million in its debut. Ben the mean chimpanzee couldn’t push off the holdover competition, even if it is one of the better January horror releases like Daybreakers and M3GAN. At least the budget is $25 million instead of $50 million, so expect this to be a tidy little run for the “chimp on a killing spree due to rabies!” chapter. Lionsgate’s The Housemaid will pass $100 million domestic in a few days and $200 million worldwide in a few days. The drop is on par with Anyone But You, despite larger totals and the lack of holidays to boost. Greenland 2: Migration earned $8.5 million in its debut; uncertain if this will have the strength of recent Gerard Butler outings (see Den of Thieves 2).
Marty Supreme earned $7.633 million in its third weekend for a $70 million 18-day cume; so year, it’s already surpassed Civil War ($69 million in 2024) to become A24’s second biggest domestic earner. Yours truly thinks it will pass Everything Everywhere All at Once ($77 million domestic total in 2022) by next weekend, so it’s a neat little win for the aspiring studio.
Sony’s Anaconda has passed $100 million worldwide, Search for SquarePants has passed $132 million worldwide, and David has passed $75 million domestically.
Next weekend sees the release of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Night Patrol, Signing Tony Raymond, and Killer Whale.
