Greenwich announced today the acquisition of North American distribution rights to the critically acclaimed drama Queen at Sea written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Lance Hammer (Ballast) with cinematography by Academy Award nominee Adolpho Veloso (Train Dreams). The Bureau production stars Academy Award winner Juliette Binoche (The English Patient, The Taste of Things), Academy Award nominee Tom Courtenay (Doctor Zhivago, 45 Years), and Anna Calder-Marshall (Wuthering Heights). Queen at Sea is Hammer’s first feature since 2008’s Ballast, which won Best Director and Best Cinematography at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for six Independent Spirit Awards.
Queen at Sea premiered to exceptional reviews in Competition at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival where it won the Silver Bear Jury Prize and the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance for Courtenay and Calder-Marshall. The film will play the North American festival circuit this fall and Greenwich will launch it into the awards season with a nationwide theatrical release later this year.
In Queen at Sea, Amanda (Binoche) and her stepfather (Courtenay) struggle with a moral issue that divides them. Has Amanda’s mother (Calder-Marshall), who is suffering from dementia, lost the ability to make critical decisions in her own best interests? If so, who is responsible – a spouse, a child, an institution – for making that determination. While navigating love and the fragile boundaries between care, protection, and autonomy, increasingly difficult choices need to be made, and repercussions spiral out of control.
