Well, for one thing, John Cena is undoubtedly not invisible on the big screen nowadays. Many fans know John Cena as the “Face That Runs The Place” or “Mr. You Can’t See Me” in the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) professional wrestling company. He held the place down as the poster boy for over a decade, amassing numerous titles, wins, and credentials and becoming the main-event attraction like his predecessors, “The Immortal” Hulk Hogan, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
Now, he has slowly moved his way full-time into the boat of Hollywood and continues to build his profile with some upcoming highly anticipated roles in beloved franchises.
Cena will have a significant role in the upcoming F9 film, the ninth adventure in the popular Fast and Furious franchise. He will play the villain, Jakob Toretto, the brother of Dom Toretto, played by Mr. Vin Diesel. The film has become juggled around the release schedule due to the pandemic, but Universal intends to have it release in the summer of 2021. Some believe this will be the film that can revive movie theaters’ positions by pulling folks to the theaters for must-see viewing. Cena sharing the spotlight with Diesel and Co. in marketing ensures the movie will be enthralling. Given how respected this franchise still is, it guarantees Cena will continue to rise in Hollywood ranks.
Secondly, in August this year, Warner Brothers will be releasing The Suicide Squad on HBO Max and in theaters, with Cena playing the role of Peacemaker. This is their attempt to revitalize the DC Franchise after the original film in 2016 directed by David Ayer turned out to become a major flop (despite being the tenth highest-grossing film of that year). James Gunn, the mind behind the zany Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, is helming the feature and ensures it will be brutally comedic and action-packed. What makes this work out well for Cena is he not only shares the screen with well-renowned actors like Idris Elba and Margot Robbie, but he gets a chance to show off his comedic roots from other small films he has been a part of (such as Blockers and Trainwreck).
Not to forget, Gunn and the production team were so pleased with his Cena’s acting that they are doing a television series spin-off centered on his character in the upcoming DC work, and it will release at the beginning of 2022 on HBO Max. On a separate note, Cena has also completed filming on Clay Tarver’s Vacation Friends and worked in China with Jackie Chan for a film that has yet to be announced.
John Cena has all the ingredients to become a box-office attraction soon, like how Dwayne Johnson took a hiatus from wrestling to pursue acting full time. Ironically enough, Cena openly criticized him years ago for leaving the wrestling business for films, which is something Cena has done himself (but he later apologized to Johnson). Cena needs that one film (or franchise) to make him a star. Johnson found tremendous success in the Fast and Furious and Jumanji franchises. Dave Bautista (a former WWE professional wrestler) became synonymous with Marvel Studios due to his incredible work as Drax the Destroyer in the Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers films. John Cena will make sure 2021 is his year to shine on the screen, and here’s to hoping he can continue that success for the near future.
