Quiver Distribution announced today that it has acquired the U.S. rights for BLUEBACK, directed by Robert Connolly (THE DRY, PAPER PLANES). BLUEBACK had its World Premiere as an official selection at the Toronto International Film Festival this year and stars Mia Wasikowska (ALICE IN WONDERLAND, CRIMSON PEAK), Radha Mitchell (LONDON HAS FALLEN, PITCH BLACK) and Eric Bana (THE DRY, DIRTY JOHN). The film is based on Tim Winton’s novel of the same name and the screenplay is written by Connolly and Winton.
While learning to dive, young Abby befriends a magnificent wild blue groper, beginning her life-long journey to save the world’s coral reefs. When the quiet reef at her coastal hometown starts to attract commercial fishing operators, it’s not long until she realizes that the fish she calls a friend is under threat. Taking inspiration from her activist Mum, she takes on poachers and developers to save her friend. Showcasing the extraordinary beauty of the world’s oceans and marine life, BLUEBACK is an empowering coming of age story.
BLUEBACK is an Arenamedia production with major production investment from Screen Australia in association with Screenwest, Lotterywest and the Western Australian Screen Fund, and is financed with support from VicScreen, with Soundfirm. The producers gratefully acknowledge the support and assistance of the Great Southern Development Commission.
