COLD WALLET – Review

Yikes, the crypto world is an obscure area that many folks dare to tread when they wish to get a footing in the decentralized space of investing in coins such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. It’s an anomaly of sorts, as we can’t predict it well enough yet (aside from making options and bets on when Bitcoin will zoom to $200k in value). But with its unpredictability comes consequences, and the amount one can toss can be their downfall.

Director Cutter Hodierne took inspiration from the Gamestop frenzy when the stock exploded in value in 2021, signaling another venue for a “get rich quick scheme” for folks out there. Cold Wallet embodies the very daunting essence of where we put it all on the line in this unpredictable asset and how it can vaporize in a heartbeat. Plotwise, a group of Redditors loses everything after a major cryptocurrency scam, and that leads them to kidnap the influencer that screwed them over. But when the home invasion takes a spin for the worst, they become the victims in a dangerous gamefield. Ah, the aspect of begetting one to strike back at those who stole from them is what lies over this group’s head.

Billy (Raul Castillo) is joined by Eva (Melonie Diaz) and Dom (Tony Cavalero) to drive up to an offroad mansion in the blankets of snow while they get into the house of financial influencer Charles Hegel (Josh Brener) to tie him up for the crypto wallets. Billy is desperate to make a living, as he wants to earn enough in the crypto realm to provide for his daughter. Castillo stands well as a desperate (yet slowly turning maniacal) man to get what he wants, while Brener tries to infuse his character with a Hannibal Lecter-esque route to attempt to convince the trio to turn against one another in this “last man standing” for the crypto keys. The pacing swiftly moves along for the 84-minute feature, and it does its utmost to engage a sense of tension in the surroundings of the household.

However, character development is on life-alert here, as outside of Billy, we don’t get much of a reason to understand the other characters’ desires (other than to get their money back). Some of the dialogue comes off as apathetic and lifeless in a feature where folks are losing millions of dollars banked on this meme coin alone. The sense of urgency takes nearly half the runtime before it finally ramps up when the bullets start firing.

While not the glossiest product out there, Cold Wallet has good beats and technicality attached, so it has a good sense of warmth to carry it onward.
