Paramount is bringing back the wingman in the form of Tom Cruise for the third installment of Top Gun.
Announced back at CinemaCon in April, producer Jerry Bruckheimer will also return with Christopher McQuarrie writing the script.
The predecessor Maverick stole the show back in 2022, amassing $1.502 billion worldwide, and was hailed as the savior for theaters returning to their former form after the decaying days of the COVID pandemic and the skyrocketing PVOD/streaming wars. Cruise’s Lt. “Maverick” Mitchell returned to teach a new batch of pilots how to successfully run a dangerous mission, one of whom is the son of a friend from the original outing.
With the third installment in the works, it is most likely to be released in 2028, as the screenplay needs time to be cleaned up, and filming is taking up the late 2026-2027 season.
Who knows if the third will be able to reach the heights of Maverick, but it’ll be another grand showing for Tom Cruise.
