Box Office Report: “Ant-Man” Dominates, “Incredibles 2” Breaks Records, “Purge” Under the Radar

Despite being released mere days ago, Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man and the Wasp” has buzzed its way to the top of the box office for July.  The film has already brought in a gross of over $161 million from 4206 theaters, as reported by Box Office Mojo. “Ant-Man” is the third Marvel film of the year, followed by the huge hit “Black Panther” which has grossed about $700 million since its February release and “Avengers: Infinity War” which brought in about $675 million since April.

In other superhero news, Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” reached the $500 million grossing mark as of July 8. This means the film makes records for being the first animated film to hit this milestone. This sequel beat out Pixar’s own 2017 release of “Beauty and the Beast” for the tenth spot of highest grossing domestic film of all time without estimated inflation. 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” currently holds the top spot with $936 million grossed in the United States alone. “Incredibles 2” is the third highest grossing film of the year.

Also to be noted is “The First Purge” bringing in a decent $42 million worldwide in the four days since its Independence Day release. This fourth addition to franchise was released to 3031 theaters, the most for the series ever, but brought in the lowest opening weekend the series has seen. “The Purge 3” holds the record for the best grossing film in the series with $79 million in 2016.

Elsewhere, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” has sizzled down since its June 22 release, scoring a $60 million weekend gross from June 29 to July 1, bring its domestic total to $333 million. $28.5 million rolled in the following weekend, from July 6 to 8, dropping drastically in numbers.
