The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards announced its nominees on July 12 ahead of its September 17th ceremony.
Naturally, HBO hit series “Game of Thrones” leads with 22 nominations across the board. Comedy sketch series “Saturday Night Live” and HBO’s “Westworld” tied for second place with 21 nominations each. Streaming service Netflix is the most nominated network this year with 112 nominations.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” garnered twelve nomination, boosting the already four wins under the show’s belt and bringing its total nominations to 20. RuPaul won two Emmy’s as host of the show in 2016 and 2017, and the show previously won for Outstanding Picture Editing and Outstanding Costuming for its season 9 premiere episode with Lady Gaga. RuPaul is up against Ellen DeGeneres, Heidi Klum/Tim Gunn and Jane Lynch for Reality Host while “Drag Race” is pitted against heavy-hitters like “The Amazing Race” and “Project Runway” in the category of Reality Competition.
Up for the Drama Series Emmy is Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and “Westworld”, NBC’s “This is Us,” Netflix’s “The Crown” and “Stranger Things” and FX’s “The Crown,”
Competition is tight in the Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, between Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish”), Issa Rae (“Insecure”), Allison Janney (“Mom”), Lily Tomlin (“Grace and Frankie”) as well as Pamela Adlon and Rachel Brosnahan.
Netflix favorite “Queer Eye” is up for Best Structured Reality Program. Ryan Murphy’s critically acclaimed “American Horror Story” only scooped up two nominations and David Lynch’s 25-years-in-the-making reboot of “Twin Peaks” scored nothing in the acting category.
Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series sees three “SNL” comedians (Aidy Bryant, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon) up against Zazie Beetz, Alex Borstein, Betty Gilpin, Laurie Metcalf and Megan Mullally.
The Emmy’s air September 17 and will be hosted by “Saturday Night Live” stars Colin Jost and Michael Che.
