Well, Tinseltown decided to take a vacation this weekend for a Super Bowl rematch, so the smaller guys are stepping up to lead the pack. So much for when titles would lead on this weekend with $20, $30 million debuts back a millennium ago. The last time we had a breakout over a notoriously publicized football finale was Warm Bodies, thirteen years ago. Well, studios can deliver the big names when they feel like it, it seems. At least it’s not as bad of weekend as 2024’s…
Send Help remained in the bloody driver’s seat with $10 million to lead the quiet weekend, a roughly 48% drop. The Sam Raimi-directed chapter has already passed $35 million in domestic box office and $53.7 million worldwide. That’s not too shabby for the renowned director, and good word-of-mouth has surely pushed more folks to see the craziness of Dylan O’Brien going against Rachel McAdams. And the best part is that this feature costs about $40 million, rather than ballooning its budget to irredeemable heights, so a PVOD release would be its salvation. Could it pass $100 million worldwide? Potentially, but ask this writer once things pick back up next weekend.
Angel Studios’ Solo Mio earned second place with $7.2 million. This film stars Kevin James as a man who gets left at the altar, so he spends his non-refundable trip going around Italy. James was once a major comedic star, starring in films such as Here Comes the Boom, The Zookeeper, and Paul Blart: Mall Cop. Granted, those had varying levels of success, so this film’s release isn’t much of a breakout but more of a “just a movie” to see in a crowded release environment.
Iron Lung took in $6 million in its second weekend and will be passing $35 million overall by tomorrow morning. It’s still good news for Markiplier, even when he takes to the streets to vex about performances of the box office and why his feature isn’t reaching the prominence that he has in his YouTube affairs. Stray Kids: The DominATE experience opened with $5.56 million, and this KPop feature gave Bleecker Street its first #1 day at the domestic box office. Dracula opened to $4.5 million, marking Vertical’s biggest opening weekend. The Strangers: Chapter 3 fumbled with only $3.5 million
Zootopia 2 has passed $1.8 billion, Avatar: Fire and Ash has passed $1.4 billion, and Melania dipped 67% in its second weekend. Oh, and The Housemaid has now passed $350 million worldwide.
Next weekend sees the release of Wuthering Heights, Goat, Crime 101, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, Cold Storage, and Honey Bunch.
